How is COMAND Better?

COMAND® is an advanced natural topdressing and soil builder produced through our proprietary MSAP composting method, and further enhanced through carefully controlled curing procedures to optimize beneficial microorganisms.

What does all that mean?

It means the turf on your course will benefit from a microbially active rootzone, will experience an improved uptake of nutrients, will require less frequent irrigation and will more effectively breakdown thatch.

grass types: Bahia, Bermuda, Zoysia

product goals: save money on irrigation

uses: athletic fields, residential and community lawns, golf course

“Our water permit is for 150 gallons per day (of residential), but we’re at 210. COMAND can help us cut water usage by 25 percent. The name of the game is water conservation.”

grass types: Bermuda, Celebration

product goals: root zone development and nematode suppression

uses: 80-20 topdressing on greens, 100 in root zone

“One week after sodding with COMAND, it took off like crazy! It was one of our sandy, nematode-looking Celebration tees, and since then it’s been coming in great.”

grass types: Bermuda, Celebration

product goals: save money on irrigation and build soil organics

uses: two applications on greens, 50-50 on trees, 80-20 elsewhere

“This area used to get torn up when we aerify, but after applying COMAND, we’ve seen white root growth for the first time and we were able to reduce our supplemental watering.”

Better Water Management

COMAND improves the water holding capacity of sandy soils, while increasing infiltration and permeability. Because COMAND can hold up to six times it’s weight in water, it provides greater drought resistance and requires less irrigation. There is simply no other more effective water conservation method for turfgrass management.

Increased Cation Exchange Capacity

Cations are positively charged ions such as calcium (Ca2+), potassium (K+) and iron (Fe2+). Course or sandy soil types typically possess a low cation exchange capacity, which means there are fewer negatively charged ions to hold these positive nutrients. The organic matter in COMAND provides these negative charges which retain nutrients through electrostatic forces.

Reduced Thatch

Thatch is undecomposed organic material that restricts water percolation and air movement. Under compaction, thatch can lead to anaerobic conditions which causes all kinds of turf problems.

Because COMAND is decomposed and stabilized organic material, the biology it contains speeds the degradation of thatch and its conversion to humus and humic compounds that provide all sorts of practical benefits.

Bottom line: save work time, reduce course costs, and improve your playing surface.

University of Florida Research

The Study—COMAND vs. Sphagnum Peat

In 2015, the University of Florida was commissioned to study the performance of turf grown in a root zone mix of COMAND in comparison to a traditional mix with sphagnum peat.

Multiple replications of microplots in 8″ diameter PVC pipes were planted with Tifway Bermuda sprigs. Three different root zone mixes were added to a depth of 12″ and 250 sting nematodes were introduced in each plot:

  • 85:15 ratio sand/peat
  • 80:20 ratio sand/COMAND
  • 60:40 ratio sand/COMAND

The Results

Faster Grow-In

During the grow-in period, sprigs filled in much faster in plots with both 20% and 40% COMAND as compared to the peat plots.

Longer Root Length

After 6 months, plots with 20% and 40% COMAND showed root lengths 55% and 80% longer, respectively, than peat plots.

Fewer Nematodes

After 12 months, nematode population densities were 95% lower in both the 20% and 40% COMAND plots, as compared to those with only peat.

Applications for COMAND on Your Course

New Construction

Use COMAND to replace peat as the organic component of a sand-based root zone media for golf course and sports field construction. The product can also be incorporated into existing soils for parks and home lawns.

Building your facility on a healthy soil from the start will provide tremendous benefits over the long term, including reduced maintenance and water usage.

Ongoing Maintenance

Use COMAND for topdressing fairways, tees, greens, sports fields, lawns and as a component of divot mixes.

Incorporate COMAND into bunker faces or mound tops to retain additional moisture and nutrients in the root zone for improved turf health. COMAND is an excellent treatment for the recovery of weak spots and problem areas.
